Fall is a great time to add trees and shrubs to your Portland garden. Cooler temperatures and fall rain mean less stress on new plants, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to establish.

The big advantage is root growth. While the top of the plant is slowing down for winter, roots can continue developing. A well-established root system gives trees and shrubs a head start when spring arrives.

Fall is a good time to plant:

* Native trees and shrubs

* Ornamental trees

* Evergreen shrubs

* Fruit trees

* Privacy plants

* Perennials and ground covers

Look for plants that fit your space and match your garden's sun, soil and drainage conditions.

Don't plant too deeply. Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball, but no deeper. Set the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.

If roots are tightly circling the container, gently loosen them before planting. Backfill with the soil you removed and water thoroughly.

Fall rain doesn't always arrive immediately. Newly planted trees and shrubs still need regular watering until the rainy season gets established.

After planting, add a layer of mulch around the root zone to help conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Keep mulch away from the trunk or stems to prevent rot.

Our heavy winter rains make drainage especially important. Avoid planting trees and shrubs where water regularly sits. A plant that tolerates wet soil is a much better choice for those areas.
